The integrity interview is a highly structured discussion with the employee who has stolen from an employer. It has strong psychological aspects and takes into account the subjects’ body language and verbal responses as the discussion progresses. It is designed to produce an admission of theft. The discussion process moves from the very broad topic of “loss” to the very specific topic of what theft the employee is involved with.
1. Introduction-Here you establish a baseline for the employee’s normal, truthful behavior.
2. Describe the three types of general losses
3. Describe the different ways that employees steal
4. Describe how investigations are conducted
5. Test for submission
6. Soft accusation
7. Build the admission
8. Get agreement to repay
This, of course, is an extremely watered down version of an interview. These steps are the foundation that is used to build the discussion on. When done properly, the employee should admit to the losses and agree to repay the owner without having to threaten or coerce them. In fact, a professional interviewer will leave the employee feeling better about himself/herself for fixing their mistakes. Just think how good you, as an owner, will feel knowing that the theft is finally over and everyone can move on with their lives.
