Eyes
The Eyes Tell the Story
The eyes will always give away a shoplifter. There are two things that they will do to share with you the fact that they are stealing:
- Make eye contact
- Make no eye contact
Eye Contact
You might look at this and be confused but, bear with me. A keen observer will utilize this technique as they are walking their race-track. Starting and ending with your camera room, a complete circuit of your building should yield a few targets for you to pick up on your cameras.
One type of behavior that you are looking for is someone making eye contact with you. A person that’s in the middle of doing dirt will be concerned with what’s going on around them. They want to know if there’s anyone watching them so they will be forced to look around to check. They will be very skittish and will look at anyone that comes near to them. This indicator is especially powerful if the subject is doing something with both hands when they look at you.
No Eye Contact
Here is another good way to identify a potential shoplifter. They are often so involved in the theft that they must concentrate on what they are doing. They are so busy removing that price-tag or sensor that they become unaware of what’s going on around them. It’s like commute time on the freeway. When there’s an accident on the side of the highway, passerby’s are so busy looking at the incident that they fail to notice that the car in front of them has stopped.
Not the Norm
Remember, most honest people will occasionally look around for an associate or simply to take notice of where merchandise is. The shoplifter needs to use their eyes to focus on the theft. The two indicators described here can help when trying to determine which people in the store are honest and which ones are trying to get over on you.
